Symmetry: How it Benefits Small Spaces

symmetry-in-interior-design-and-its-benefit-to-smaller-spaces

Designing interiors can be tricky, but what is even more tricky is the idea of designing a whole set of requirements in smaller spaces. When we design a smaller space, the main idea is to design the space minimally and yet very efficiently workable. While designing small spaces, it becomes necessary to not cluster the space with a lot of elements. Efficiency is the key to optimum interior designing.

When designing small spaces, symmetrical design is a way which can help add an illusion of larger space and thus transform the impact of the space. Symmetry can be used in any space, while making one permanent or a flexible element, as the centre of the axis.

Symmetry creates a tidy environment for the viewer and thus makes the space appear more organised and appealing to the user.

The idea of symmetry is very subtle. Our senses and mind perceive the sense of balance and provide harmony and peace to the mind. This subconscious element makes the space even more comfortable, as the mind is relaxed.

Balance is one of the basic principles of design. When designing for individuals we certainly observe a stark difference even in the most basic of elements.

Using bright colours in symmetry is a very minute tactic, but effective in making the feel of the space appear larger than it is.

In the living space, symmetrically arrange the sofa and television sets. In Open kitchen, we can use the floating platform as a line of axis or else the dining space. The dining space in itself is symmetrical in almost all cases, use it as an axis in linear spaces.

Living spaces –

In the living room, use the sofa as an element for the axis. Accordingly, place the elements of either side of the sofa. A single-seater, a lamp, a small side table, a newspaper stand and a coffee table at the centre. A tidy and clutter-free living space, with the most basic of elements.

Kitchen + dining –

Use Kitchen counters as an axis against the kitchen and the dining space and thus establishing an asymmetrical symmetry.

Bedrooms –

Bedrooms can be the ideal space to experiment with the element of symmetry. Use the double bed as an axis, and the elements like a side table, a night lamp, or even a bookshelf and dressing table to balance the spaces on either side.

Adding mirrors –

Mirrors are elements which naturally add symmetry, by mirroring the objects. Hence, use them as elements which completely mirror the whole design of the space, and thus making the space appear to be larger than it is.

Adding extra elements of design which accentuate the space are necessary. These elements are to spaces what accessories are to clothes. Any element like a wallpaper, a mirror, a  centrally placed table, a designer rug, evened out curtains or even the placement of light are all factors which can maximize symmetric advantage.

Anything from a sofa seating to bedroom space, study rooms to leisure spaces can be made to feel important and appear larger than they actually are, hence symmetry here being the reason for an added advantage.

Every room needs a space or element which can be focused upon, which thus provides an element for the focal axis to the viewer of the space. The organisation of space has a huge impact on how we can perceive and experience space.

Symmetry really highlights the best parts of a space, elements of interior or even architectural elements like windows or doors.

The essence of the space lies in the arrangement of elements. The more easily accessible and clutter-free they are, the mind automatically eases out. Thus, the space appears clutter-free despite containing a lot of elements.

A space which doesn’t feel cluttered can thus not appear smaller. Hence, the illusion of a larger space. We can alter every space to appear efficient and easy to access. That is what a space should feel like, it should make you feel relaxed at the slightest glance towards it.
